ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • In St. Joseph County, slick roads from more than a foot of snow on Thursday morning led to multiple slide-offs and two semis jammed on US 31 near Kern Road and Bremen Highway — police advised only essential travel.  WSBT

  • Various communities in Michiana will honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with events throughout January, including a community breakfast on Monday, Jan. 19 at Lake Michigan College + free museum tours and services in South Bend, Benton Harbor, Cassopolis and Elkhart.  WNDU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A $10 million federal grant was announced yesterday by the State Board of Education in a partnership between the Indiana Department of Education and Notre Dame to boost student literacy. Governor Braun says the funding will expand the Tutor-ND model (virtual tutoring) to support rural and underserved communities.  95.3 MNC
  • The Indiana Department of Education announced a $10 million federal grant to expand Notre Dame’s Tutor-ND tutoring program statewide. Notre Dame will serve as the coordination hub — recruiting additional universities to support students, officials said.  WVPE

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Jan.15, heavy snowfall forced closures for schools, businesses and government offices in the South Bend region, with the School City of Mishawaka holding e-learning days while travelers faced slick roads around Mishawaka. More snowfall hit later in the day, worsening travel conditions + prompting local authorities to advise caution.  South Bend Tribune

  • Parkview Health partnered with national nonprofit Undue Medical Debt to forgive $64.13 million in past-due bills for 35,694 patients, mostly in Indiana. Letters will be mailed this week (no follow-up needed) so eligible patients receive immediate relief.  InkFreeNews

Coach Mike Lightfoot former Head Coach at Bethel will share at half time of the Goshen- Mishawaka boys basketball game. I scholarship fund is being launched in Mr Troyers name for a Mishawaka student to receive to attend Bethel University
