- ➤ Bishop Kevin Rhoades urged the Catholic community to increase donations to Catholic Relief Services and support legal reforms during an Ash Wednesday lecture at Holy Cross College yesterday. He warned that cuts to food and health services may worsen the plight of migrants and refugees. WVPE
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Bendix Woods County Park hosts maple syrup season from late February to mid-March, where staff show visitors how to tap 60 trees plus use tubing on 160 more to collect sap and produce syrup. Families, students and volunteers can join the tradition and enjoy Sugar Camp Days on March 14-15. WNDU
- ➤ WUBS-FM (89.7) Program Director Shane Williams shared the station’s history and its mission to spread love and peace through Michiana during a recent discussion. South Bend Tribune

- ➤ During Black History Month, Indiana University South Bend Civil Rights Heritage will debut four local stories featuring the legacy of Peggy Flowers Eskridge, a pioneering educator who served 36 years in the South Bend schools. A new online encyclopedia will launch in 2027. South Bend Tribune

- ➤ NIPSCO customers are urging additional steps to curb high utility bills after state lawmakers made partial progress on affordability measures on Feb. 19 (more action is needed from officials). WNDU
- ➤ Statewide ratepayer and environmental advocates met in Granger on Feb. 19 at the Harris Library to discuss Microsoft’s planned data center build this summer and demand more transparency. The panel, led by candidate Jan Cervelli, urged county officials to secure fair cost-sharing and protect local utility rates. WVPE
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ We Make Indiana gathered Thursday in Mishawaka to plan future steps and secure funding for mental health crisis response. Faith and community leaders met with local officials to help remove risks from the care system. WSBT
- ➤ Meijer recalled 211,500 sets of children’s sleepwear sold in Indiana and nearby areas after tests found the garments may not meet flammability standards; customers are urged to return them for a refund (items were sold between Dec. 2024 and Oct. 2025) and no injuries have been reported. - ➤ Olympic gold medalist Sarah Hildebrandt from Penn High School overcame a dislocated elbow to win bronze in Tokyo 2020 and gold in Paris 2024, inspiring local athletes with her perseverance. WSBT
- ➤ The Notre Dame women’s basketball team defeated Wake Forest 78-54 on Thursday night on the road, with Hannah Hidalgo scoring a game-high 26 points. The win moves them closer to March Madness as they have three regular season games remaining before they travel to SMU Sunday at 6 p.m. WNDU
