EDUCATION NEWS

  • Indiana second and third graders will begin the IREAD test window March 2nd through March 13th; local teacher Robyn Futa at Beiger Elementary in Mishawaka says students are practicing reading daily to build essential skills for the test.  WSBT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • David Dech will take over as NICTD president on March 16, bringing experience from South Florida and Texas to improve commuter train service and build community ties. Outgoing president Mike Noland will assist with the transition through August to complete the West Lake Corridor project.  WVPE

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local health experts stress that American Heart Month prompts residents to practice healthier diets, regular exercise + early screenings to help prevent heart disease as experts urge monitoring blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar. The community observed Heart Valve Disease Awareness Day on Sunday, Feb. 22.  WSBT

SPORTS NEWS

  • Voting is open today for the South Bend Tribune Athlete of the Week poll featuring 11 candidates from nine local schools. Votes can be submitted unlimitedly until 11:59 p.m. ET Thursday, Feb. 26.  South Bend Tribune
  • Notre Dame basketball will face Duke on Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. at Purcell Pavilion + the sellout game will air on ESPN as the team aims to bounce back after a tough loss.  South Bend Tribune
  • At Penn’s natatorium on Saturday, Feb. 21, the Kingsmen broke state records by scoring 590 points in 11 winning races—qualifying 21 swimmers for state finals at IUPUI Natatorium beginning Friday, Feb. 27.  South Bend Tribune
  • On Sunday, Feb. 22, Hannah Hidalgo celebrated her 21st birthday by leading Notre Dame to an 88 to 63 win over SMU at Moody Coliseum in Dallas. She scored 31 points, grabbed nine rebounds and added 11 steals in one of her best games this season.  South Bend Tribune
  • The Indiana high school boys basketball state tournament sectional pairings were released Sunday on IHSAAtv.org, and sectional play will begin on March 3 with state finals scheduled for March 28 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse (Mishawaka hosts a matchup between Mishawaka and South Bend Adams).  South Bend Tribune
