  • KeyBank announced a three-year, $240K grant to fund the YWCA’s Strengthening Communities Initiative—a 10-week program teaching financial literacy to women abuse survivors during an event on Thursday, Mar. 12 in South Bend.  WNDU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Career seekers visited the Notre Dame campus on Thursday, Mar. 12 for a free event to explore trades careers and learn through hands on activities. Attendees enjoyed guided tours of active construction sites (an opportunity to see available trade skills in action).  WSBT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Indiana Michigan Power will raise water levels at the Elkhart Hydroelectric Plant on Monday, Mar. 16 by about six inches per day over four days, and residents along the St. Joseph River are advised to complete cleanup projects before the water rises.  95.3 MNC

FINANCE NEWS

  • Brightpoint is launching a Community Loan Center program to help low-income employees avoid high payday loan fees by offering advances up to $1,000 through participating employers (at no cost to employers) in South Bend. Local nonprofits and banks attended an information session to discuss the initiative.  WVPE

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Mike Braun surveyed tornado damage on Mar. 12 in northwest Indiana — he met with first responders to assess the impact and guide recovery efforts.  WNDU
  • A new law lets residents break a car window to rescue a pet from a locked car if 911 is called first. Governor Braun signed the bill last week and it will take effect July 1st with rules limiting force and requiring waiting for help.  WSBT
  • E. 6th Street will be closed west of Campbell Street beginning today for utility installations, with work expected to finish by Apr. 17 (weather permitting) so drivers should plan alternate routes.  WNDU

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Notre Dame assistant coaches recalled Lou Holtz’s demanding yet caring leadership following his death on March 4, sharing that his legacy continues to inspire work on campus + in the local community.  South Bend Tribune
  • Marian boys basketball will face East Chicago Central in the IHSAA regional game Saturday, March 14 at 5:00 p.m. at Michigan City High School after head coach Robb Berger receives a one-game suspension for an IHSAA violation + assistant coach Matt Sobieralski will lead the team.  South Bend Tribune
  • Notre Dame rehired coach Jevaughn Codlin last month to lead the safeties, easing the coaching shift after Mike Mickens left for the NFL. His energetic work has already won praise from players and is set to support new co-defensive coordinator Aaron Henry.  South Bend Tribune
