  • Registration is open for the Sunburst Races — a local event with a half marathon, 10K run, 5K run and a family 5K Fitness Walk — that will take place on May 31 in South Bend, where over 4,000 runners and walkers will support Beacon Children's Hospital. ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Overnight a raging fire severely damaged a home on Reek Drive in Osceola (just north of McKinley Highway) with a resident safely escaping, and firefighters say flames consumed most of the house while crews (from local stations) work to determine the cause.  WNDU

  • The Aspen Tap House on Main Street north of Day Road permanently closed its doors after operating since May 2021 in the former Scotty’s Brewhouse—its farewell note was posted for customers. Its original location in Champaign, Ill. remains open.  WNDU

CRIME NEWS

  • Michael Eppenbaugh of Warsaw stole a Mishawaka police car over 15 months ago, led it on a chase that ended in a crash in Cass County, and was sentenced on Wednesday to two years in prison—he must also pay $18,640 to the City of Mishawaka.  ABC57

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A civil rights complaint was filed Wednesday against Indiana University South Bend alleging the school discriminated on the basis of race, color, and national origin by promoting five DEI scholarships—claims the lawsuit says violate Title VI and the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.  ABC57

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A major intersection improvement project begins today at the busy junction of Ireland Road and Ironwood Road, prompting temporary lane restrictions and detours. Crews will reconstruct pavement, realign curbs, and install a new traffic signal over six phases—expected to finish by early July.  95.3 MNC

HEALTH NEWS

  • St. Joseph County Health Department confirmed the first case of babesiosis— a rare and severe tick disease—in our county as warmer weather increases tick activity. Health official Brett Davis urged residents to use CDC-approved insect repellents and check for ticks while filling out a survey on trends— including data on the Lone Star Tick linked to alpha-gal allergy.  WSBT
  • Hoosier teens are nearly 3% more likely than their national peers to have used cocaine, meth, or heroin, according to new drug abuse statistics.
