  • The MLK Dream Center in South Bend will host an honor walk and ribbon cutting on April 4 to show its renovated campus—starting at 10 a.m. from the Civil Rights Heritage Center and featuring an 11 a.m. performance by the Adams High School Jazz Band.   • After a weekend of severe weather, fraudsters targeted Michiana residents by offering fake government funding and pressuring them for deposits—officials warn consumers to verify credentials, get multiple written estimates, and contact trusted agencies before signing contracts.  ABC57

EDUCATION NEWS

  • State Representative Michelle Davis credited teachers and parents for Indiana’s rise to 6th nationally in reading proficiency as improvements in fourth graders' math scores have been noted. In this legislative session, House Bill 1634—designed to automatically enroll qualifying middle schoolers in advanced math and to introduce early numeracy screenings—has passed the House and is now set for Senate review.  95.3 MNC

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Almost 55,000 homes and businesses lost power on Monday morning after severe storms tore through Michiana on Sunday—between South Bend and Granger over 15,000 I&M customers and another 11,000 in Elkhart were affected. Midwest Energy reported over 7,700 outages as damage spread across the area.  WSBT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mishawaka Utility—the city-owned provider of electric, water and wastewater services—is still unable to give power restoration times due to widespread damage. Crews worked through the night and will continue restoring power as quickly as possible.  ABC57
  • The Indiana State Police will join a national traffic safety campaign from April 5th to 19th to increase patrols that target speeding and distracted drivers – the move follows 17,000 crashes and 230 deaths caused by these issues last year.  95.3 MNC

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, Beacon Health System ended visitor restrictions at its hospitals and clinics as a decline in flu cases allowed easing of measures put in place since early February — mask use is now optional — though masks remain available on request by staff.  WNDU
