  • WNDU launched its live Giraffe Cam at Potawatomi Zoo on Apr. 8, giving locals a continuous view of the zoo's giraffes (available online 24/7).  WNDU
  • WSBT and Sinclair Cares partnered with Cultivate Food Rescue on Wednesday, Apr. 8 to package 1,436 meals for kids’ backpack programs and shelters in Mishawaka, supporting local food needs.  WSBT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jeff Burbrink from Purdue Extension advises local farmers to wait for warm, dry soil before planting since the best corn yield window is from April 20 to May 10 — planting too soon in cool, wet conditions can lower yields.  InkFreeNews

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Third Street Sewer Improvement Project entered phase three on Wednesday, April 8, closing Pine and East Third and limiting access on Pine Street between Lincolnway East and Third; crews will complete work mid-July, weather permitting.  WSBT
  • State Road 23 from North Liberty to South Bend is under resurfacing that limits traffic to one lane and includes road widening, with flaggers directing vehicles until November; a structure replacement in May near US-31 (Ireland Road) will cause a temporary full closure on the roadway.  WSBT
  • Indiana Governor Mike Braun declared a 30-day gas tax holiday on Wed, Apr. 8 that paused the 7% sales tax to ease gas price burdens. He said he will review the policy after the period ends & urged retailers to pass savings on to consumers.  WSBT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Sara Herrity, a Granger mother diagnosed with Parkinson’s at 39, attended the Parkinson’s Policy Forum in Washington in March to urge lawmakers to boost NIH funding and review the herbicide paraquat. Her efforts highlight growing concerns for people in Indiana dealing with this disease.  South Bend Tribune

  • Steve Drabyn will leave Bethel University's men's basketball program on April 19 after seven seasons and join Marian University as head coach on April 20, citing family reasons (he will spend more time with his wife and four children).  South Bend Tribune
  • Five seniors have been named as finalists for the 2026 Indiana Mr. Basketball honor, including Brady Scholl from Northridge; the winner will be announced later this week (high school coaches and media cast the votes).  South Bend Tribune
