Farmers markets across the South Bend region are set to open this summer, offering fresh produce, meats and local crafts for community shopping.
The list details times and locations—from the Mishawaka Farmers Market on Ironworks Ave to markets in New Carlisle and Elkhart—to help residents plan their visits.
Black Pine Animal Sanctuary opens for the season today with general admission available from 1-4 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays—Saturdays feature guided tours and a 3 p.m. enrichment tour.
New animal residents include Akila the bobcat, who was introduced to resident Chester, and two reptiles from a local rescue that will settle into their homes by the end of May.

Indiana First Lady Maureen Braun launched a fundraising initiative to expand Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library across Indiana.
She said she will work with philanthropic organizations and state leaders to secure funding and raise awareness for a public+private partnership that supports free books for children from birth to age five.

The City of Mishawaka is encouraging residents to gather loose leaf piles for a one-week pickup program that begins Monday, May 5—leaves must be at the curbside by 7:00 a.m. on the day before regular trash collection.
City officials add that only loose leaves will be collected and they must be placed away from storm drains, parked vehicles, or other obstructions.

Boys & Girls Clubs in Northern Indiana are boosting mental health support for 5,000 children by training staff in four rural counties to use crisis intervention and trauma-informed practices.
The clubs now offer onsite therapy appointments, free autism screenings with a two-week diagnosis turnaround, and a biofeedback video game program to help kids manage stress.
Trader Joe’s issued a voluntary recall for a batch of Sesame Miso Salads because the topping packet may include an undeclared milk allergen — some salads were packaged with Parmesan cheese instead of crispy onions.
The recalled items, with use-by dates of April 28th or 29th, were sold in 18 states including Indiana and can be identified by UPC 00773164.

Senior tennis player Anni Amalnathan now leads Saint Joseph girls tennis after moving into the No. 1 singles spot amid a season of wins and tough losses — she said she is focused on learning from each match.
The Huskies are 6-1 through Wednesday and will play a rescheduled match against rival Penn on May 6 — her coach expects her steady play as the team chases another state title.
