27-year-old Reontre Lawrence of South Bend was found guilty in early April of murder, reckless homicide, and a firearm enhancement in connection with the 2023 deaths of Amarion Kirk and Jasani Taylor — he was sentenced to 80 years in the Indiana Department of Corrections.

Rafael Morton, a South Bend native who recently began his term on the St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners after decades of local service, will be honored with the African American Legacy Award at The History Museum’s Juneteenth Reception on June 10 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in South Bend—attendees must reserve tickets costing $60 in advance.

Indiana’s Senate Bill 1 gave Hoosier families modest property tax cuts and provided businesses with large tax breaks to lower production costs — however, these moves may result in higher income taxes, fewer factory jobs, and lost opportunities to tackle hospital monopolies.

Gov. Mike Braun signed a bill on May 6 that strips nonprofit hospital systems of their tax-exempt status if their combined charges match or exceed the state average price—this law targets the Big Five hospitals including Franciscan Health in Mishawaka, and hospitals must lower prices to regain their status.

On May 5, the IHSAA board approved Girls Flag Football as an emerging sport—supported by a 17–1 vote and strong backing from the Indianapolis Colts—and it will join Girls Lacrosse in the emerging sports process for the 2025-26 school year.
