  • Local non-profits are offering community meals this week to help residents plan for the holiday weekend—Thursday Burger Night on May 22 at Galien American Legion Post 344 runs from 4 to 8 p.m., and a Fish, Chicken or Shrimp Fry takes place on May 23 at Ryan A. Balmer American Legion Post on Mishawaka Ave. Additional events include Kitchen Open on May 23 and May 25 at American Legion Pulaski Post and a Pancake Breakfast with a Garden Tractor Pull on May 24 in Galien.  South Bend Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, Notre Dame held its 180th commencement ceremony in Michiana as hundreds of Fighting Irish graduates walked the stage and officially joined the alumni — marking a milestone for the university.  ABC57

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of South Bend will begin construction on the Mishawaka Avenue Streetscape Project today to add new sidewalks, lighting, water mains, and landscaping along Mishawaka Avenue between Beyer/Longfellow and Emerson. During work only one westbound lane will be open, eastbound traffic will detour, and the project will finish in two phases by the end of September — access to businesses will be maintained.  95.3 MNC
  • Admiral Christopher Grady urged 2,084 Notre Dame graduates yesterday during their commencement to be truthful leaders by relying on moral courage, sharing personal service stories and advising them to choose the harder right over the easier wrong – advice meant to prepare them for a challenging future.  South Bend Tribune

  • Today at Potawatomi Zoo, over 1,000 NICU families, doctors, and nurses gathered for Beacon Children's Hospital’s annual NICU reunion—celebrating the progress of former patients.   • Blicky is a one-year-old dog who weighs over 80 pounds and was returned earlier this month after his previous owners said he played too roughly with their cat.   • Notre Dame baseball heads to the ACC Tournament as the No. 11 seed and will play No. 14 seed Boston College on Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET in Durham, N.C.—the Irish rallied after a mid-April series loss by winning 10 of their last 12 ACC games and will face sixth-seeded Virginia if they win.  South Bend Tribune
  • The YMCA of Greater Michiana has launched the South Bend Tribune Athlete of the Week vote for May 12-18 and changed the rules to allow one vote per hour per device—voters can cast ballots until 11:59 p.m. May 22. Ten athletes from northern Indiana and southwest Michigan have been nominated based on standout performances in track, golf, softball and baseball—supporters are encouraged to vote for their favorite.  South Bend Tribune
