EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hoosiers can soon get federal aid if they pursue industry credentials from select providers — the grants require 70% completion and job placement within a year. The Commission for Higher Education is seeking public feedback for changes to performance funding, with final recommendations due by summer.  InkFreeNews
  • Bethel University teams with Career Academy Network of Public Schools and Boys — Girls Clubs of Northern Indiana Corridor to launch Success Academy on the Mishawaka campus this fall; kindergarten and first-grade classes begin Aug. 5 and will offer classroom trial teaching for future educators.  InkFreeNews

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting next Thursday, Byrkit will be closed from Miami Club to Mishawaka Avenue and Mishawaka Avenue from Byrkit Avenue to State Street, with the intersection at State and Mishawaka Avenue also closed—this marks phase one of a summer road improvement project ending by Aug. 11.  WNDU
  • The Indiana Department of Transportation announced that bridge work on U.S. 30 between Oak Road and Plymouth-Goshen Road will begin on or after May 26; traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction (work is expected to continue until late November).  95.3 MNC

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Developers bought the old USA Skate Center on Main Street about a week ago and are cleaning out damaged materials while preserving historic items like the Pepsi sign. They will meet with the city on Friday to discuss ideas including shops, a food court & kid space.  95.3 MNC

SPORTS NEWS

  • Two local high school seniors from Mishawaka and Plymouth are preparing to compete in the national bass fishing tournament in Cumberland, Kentucky just over a month from now. They have trained for years and look forward to the challenge.  WNDU
  • Two high school seniors from Mishawaka and Plymouth are preparing for a national bass fishing tournament—after years of honing their skills—and aim to showcase their talent on a larger stage.  WNDU
  • Shawn Lyght of Notre Dame wins the William C. Schmeisser Award for best defensive player in lacrosse for the second straight season — he is only the eighth player to win consecutively and the second in Notre Dame history. He will take on Syracuse at 2:30 p.m. today.  WNDU
