  • The Veterans of Foreign Wars will host their annual Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 26th at 9:30 a.m. along Main and Third in Mishawaka—parade members will travel north on Main then west on Mishawaka Avenue to end at the corner of Mishawaka and Forest with a ceremony honoring veterans.  City of Mishawaka
  • The Balmer family of Mishawaka plans to honor Special Agent Ryan Balmer’s sacrifice during Memorial Day weekend by sharing memories of his service as a loadmaster and special agent before he died from an IED in 2007. They will keep his memory alive with fundraisers supporting military nonprofits and a memorial at Battell Park—helping the community remember his legacy.  WNDU
  • Memorial Day weekend is forecast to see heavy travel as AAA projects 3.61 million air trips and 39 million car trips, with South Bend International Airport saying renovations will not delay flights.   • Mishawaka police charged 35-year-old Edward Will Booker III with six counts after responding to a domestic violence call on May 22 at a home on East 8th Street where he beat his eight-month pregnant ex-girlfriend—Booker fled before officers captured him but was later arrested at a nearby residence.  ABC57

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gov. Mike Braun signed a new truancy law that expands oversight and support to middle and high school students with repeated unexcused absences. The law, which will take effect on July 1, will require schools to meet with families to develop attendance plans and will allow county prosecutors to help connect students with counseling—while the department of education will publish annual data on excused absences.  InkFreeNews
