  • Social worker Heather Mason will host a free 5K Family Fun Walk Saturday at 9 a.m. at Howard Park to raise funds for a temporary pet sheltering project aimed at helping pets during life emergencies; the event will feature resource tables & prizes for best human & pup duo.  WVPE

  • Scoobies sandwich shop is adding an outdoor patio that will have paved seating, landscaping, accent lighting, and a gas-fed fire pit (an adjacent garage will be partly converted) with work expected to finish by mid-July. The redevelopment commission approved a loan covering more than $42,000 of the $85,000 cost.  WNDU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Saint Mary’s College finished its Heritage and Research Center to house the life stories of thousands of Catholic sisters, and Bishop Kevin Rhoades blessed the center on Tuesday, May 26 - the college will spend the next year organizing its archival records.  WSBT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New lane restrictions start today on Ireland Road between Michigan Street and Ironwood Drive to support the ongoing Ireland Road Pavement Project, which includes installing new curbs (patching roadway and shifting a curb for better truck turns). Traffic will be limited to one lane in each direction until the end of June.  95.3 MNC
  • Gov. Mike Braun said on Friday that he may extend the gas tax suspension before it expires Sunday, June 7 (keeping fuel prices lower for motorists). He is expected to decide this week under Indiana’s energy emergency law.  InkFreeNews

SPORTS NEWS

  • Today, May 27, South Bend area high school baseball teams begin their sectional tournament with games at Baker Park in Mishawaka (a local venue). More matchups are set through Monday, June 1, as teams vie for the sectional titles.  South Bend Tribune
  • Former Notre Dame guard Olivia Miles, who transferred to TCU last year for a new challenge, was selected as the No. 2 pick in the WNBA draft for the Minnesota Lynx, and she said her move came after four and a half years at Notre Dame (she remains proud of her past accomplishments).  South Bend Tribune
  • Yesterday, Notre Dame lacrosse lost 16-9 to Princeton in the NCAA title game in South Bend. Coach Kevin Corrigan praised standout goalie Thomas Ricciardelli, who made 19 saves, and said he will work to help the team return to Championship Weekend next season.  South Bend Tribune
