Indiana will ban the purchase of candy and soda with SNAP benefits starting Friday Jan.

1 — making it the first state to use a waiver approved by the USDA as Gov. Mike Braun’s plan aims to improve nutrition in low-income communities. Officials said data showing more spending on sugary items than healthy foods led to the measure.

St. Joseph County will begin work on a new park in the county’s northeast later this year after buying a 115-acre parcel off Anderson Road in early 2000.

The park will have two fishing ponds—walking paths, picnic shelters, two playgrounds and restrooms—and one open house is set at Discovery Middle School on May 29 from 6 to 8 p.m.

St. Joseph County Assessor Mike Castellon will hold a new property tax assessments town hall on Saturday June 7 from 10 a.m. to noon at the County-City Building's 4th Floor Council Chambers—he added the extra meeting after many requests.

The Indiana High School Athletic Association approved updates to Rule 19 on May 5 to let first-time transfer athletes—if not seniors—play immediately when they change schools within their first six semesters.

The rule will go into effect Sunday, June 1 and will allow athletes to join their new teams without a waiting period next fall.
