St. Joseph County officials said construction of the GM-Samsung SDI electric vehicle battery plant in New Carlisle is ahead of schedule and visible to drivers along SR 2 — the 2.5 million square foot facility began early 2024 and will finish in 2026 with production starting in 2027. The plant is expected to employ about 1,700 people — county officials noted the project is gaining momentum despite concerns over worker availability for nearby development projects.

County officials said on Friday that NIPSCO did not meet its commitments for the Cleveland Road roundabout project—communication has stopped and the closure is postponed until the county receives an updated schedule.

The revised closure date will be announced once further details are provided.
