  • Local 4-H members and young farmers are partnering with Cultivate Food Rescue to buy animals at youth auctions and turn them into 2-lb meat packages for families in need. The program feeds local neighbors and supports community youth—keeping food local.  WNDU

  • Local entrepreneurs Andrew and Jennifer Miller launched Custom Campsites, a service that sets up and takes down camp sites in northeast Indiana — families can book packages starting at $199 that include tents, sleeping bags, chairs, firewood and other camping essentials at partnered campgrounds.  InkFreeNews

CRIME NEWS

  • Police say an 18-year-old was injured in a shooting on Tuesday night on Ardennes Avenue in Mishawaka.  WNDU
  • Mishawaka Police responded after 11:30 p.m. last night at 226 Ardennes Avenue where an 18-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound to his hip and was treated at a local hospital before being released—detectives have interviewed one person at the scene—and the investigation continues.  WNDU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A new report from the Annie E. Casey Foundation shows that Indiana moved from 27th to 25th in child well-being, with economic well-being and education now ranking 11th and family and community at 31st. Tami Silverman of the Indiana Youth Institute said smart investments helped the gains + she warned that falling math and reading scores along with federal cuts to Medicaid and SNAP need to be addressed.  95.3 MNC
  • Mishawaka’s school board approved a five-year extension contract for Superintendent Dr. Theodore Stevens on Wednesday (June 11), extending his tenure until June 2030 (his pay for the 2025-26 school year is $180,000 with a 2% raise each year). Dr. Stevens, who began his role in 2022 and has prior ties to the district, said the contract reflects the trust he has built with board members.  ABC57
  • Work is scheduled to begin in September on the new Hums Elementary School in Mishawaka as the new building will be built next to the old one which will later be demolished (it is set to open for the 2027-2028 school year) at a cost of about $41 million (with no tax increase).  WSBT

  • On June 10th, Mishawaka Police Officers Tyler Thornton and Bradley Taylor were honored with the Indiana State Police Lifesaving Award for pulling a female driver from her burning vehicle during a nighttime pursuit — Officer Brian Robbins helped with CPR and an AED, leading to her recovery.  City of Mishawaka
