  • Bruce Pierce, a longtime conservationist with a 100-year family legacy on Tippecanoe Lake, was named the Distinguished Lake Citizen of the Year by Lake Tippecanoe Property Owners — his grandson accepted the award on his behalf and he received a $500 grant for his favorite nonprofit.  InkFreeNews
  • Big Sister Briana and Little Sister Makia from Kosciusko County were named National Big Sister and Little Sister of the Year at a national conference on June 12; they will now serve as national advocates for Big Brothers Big Sisters in Northeast Indiana. Their match began in 2014 (when they started as School Buddies), marking the second national honor for the chapter in three years.  InkFreeNews
  • Mishawaka has a busy August with the Summer Concert Series taking place Mondays at Battell Park Bandshell (7:00–8:30 p.m.), Wednesdays at Ball Band Biergarten (6:30–8:30 p.m.), and Thursdays at Central Park Stage (6:00–8:00 p.m.) and a weekly Mishawaka Market held Sundays (10 a.m.–2 p.m. at Ironworks Plaza). ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • New EPA regulations set very low limits on mercury discharges, and Mishawaka’s Water Resource Recovery Facility—removing over 96% of mercury—has exceedances of these limits. The facility has launched a pollutant minimization program to help citizens and local businesses reduce mercury use.  City of Mishawaka

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Government and nonprofit groups have set up cooling centers to help residents cope with a forecast heat index of 102 degrees today—in Mishawaka, the library is open Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and the Food Pantry is open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  WVPE

HEALTH NEWS

  • A recent survey found that most young adults in St. Joseph County do not understand the risks of unprotected sex, and an analysis of 2023 data ranked the county 130th among 345 large counties, with 2,100 cases marking a 19% decline from last year and a 30% drop from 2021's peak. Dr. Michelle Migliore noted that only 13% of young people knew about their risk—cultural and religious factors may affect condom use.  WVPE
