ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • An Edwardsburg motorcyclist aged 53 was hospitalized with serious injuries after a collision with a car near Douglas Road on State Road 23 on Saturday, Aug. 23—when a 26-year-old South Bend woman leaving a convenience store turned left and cooperated with investigators as the crash remained under investigation.  95.3 MNC

CRIME NEWS

  • A Mishawaka man, Kevin Ellis, was sentenced to 72 months in prison and four years of supervised release for possessing a loaded gun with a large capacity magazine and controlled substances—fentanyl pills, methamphetamine pills, marijuana, and a digital scale—found during a traffic stop.  WSBT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State corrections officials announced they will keep the Indiana State Prison open after the new Northwest Indiana Correctional Facility opens in 2027—reversing earlier plans to close it—while the Westville Correctional Facility will shut as scheduled. Local leaders in Michigan City are working on ideas to repurpose the historic site if the state later revises its transfer agreements.  InkFreeNews
  • Today, St. Joseph County Commissioners will consider an agreement that allows Mishawaka to extend water and sewer service to Microsoft’s proposed data center in Granger—this deal also includes plans to serve undeveloped areas with failing wells and septic systems and sets the stage for future annexation. City and county officials will use a study by the Lochmueller Group to identify areas needing service and work with Microsoft to negotiate funding for the project.  WVPE
