- ➤ This week is Rail Safety Week and Indiana Operation Lifesaver is leading community events—social media campaigns and educational videos—to warn people about dangers near railroad tracks. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ South Bend Community School Corporation is facing a shortage of school bus drivers as the interim transportation director Robert Durm drives students and calls for new drivers while retired drivers return part time—concerned parents like Phillip Hutchen said they are frustrated with the service. The district will hire at least 15 more drivers and may raise pay to help fix the issue. WNDU

- ➤ Masamba, the beloved white rhino at the Potawatomi Zoo, will leave for a 10,000-acre conservation center in Ohio to breed; the zoo will host a farewell party on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.—a final chance for visitors to see him before his move. WNDU
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Area Plan Commission voted unanimously—7–0—against the proposed $12 billion data center in St. Joseph County at a meeting Tuesday afternoon. WNDU
- ➤ Indiana deer hunting laws took effect on September 15, allowing hunters to bag up to six antlerless deer and use crossbows with an archery license as well as rifles with centerfire cartridges of 0.219 inch or more—Conservation Officer Tomlinson urged hunters to remain alert for safety on public and private land. - ➤ Turkey Creek Regional Sewer District will receive $4.8 million in funding on Sept.18 to upgrade the Enchanted Hills water utility with new hydrants, valves, and water mains—project plans include replacing a 60-year-old well and adding a new water tower. Engineers said bids will be invited by mid-January and warned that some shutoffs or boil advisories may occur during construction. InkFreeNews
- ➤ Today, a federal appeals court ruled that Indiana cannot force death doula Lauren Richwine to get a funeral license to advise families on end-of-life options—protecting her free speech as the case returns to a lower court for further action. 95.3 MNC
- ➤ The St. Joseph County Redevelopment Commission approved plans to build a new South Shore Line train station in New Carlisle near the American Legion Post at 494 E. Michigan Street—this station will include improved parking and pedestrian access and is expected to be built within the next two to three years. County officials are also considering moving a section of Bendix Drive near South Bend International Airport to extend the runway for international cargo planes—pending a geophysical study on a former landfill site. - ➤ On Tuesday, the St. Joseph County Area Plan Commission voted 7-0 against rezoning prime farmland near New Carlisle for a data center, sending the proposal to the county council for a final vote on Sept. 23. Opponents and the county’s economic development director expressed concerns that the project could increase pressures on roads, water and sewer services+ prompting worries about long-term changes in the area.
