  • Work is underway at Eddy Street Commons as two new restaurants are added — BiBiBop Asian Grill is moving into the former Blaze Pizza space — and Tous Les Jours, a French-Asian bakery, is taking over the old McAlister’s Deli location on Angela Boulevard, though opening dates are not yet announced.  95.3 MNC

  • Channel Seed agronomist Chris Brazel reported rapid soybean harvest progress in northeast Indiana with 24 percent of beans finished—warm, dry weather has sped up the pace but calls for more moisture.   • Public education advocate Justin Oakley said political pressure, low pay, and shrinking budgets are pushing Indiana teachers out of classrooms. He noted state leaders have limited free speech guidelines and lowered bonus payments—factors that have added to the teacher shortage.  95.3 MNC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Northern Indiana Public Service Co. announced that income-eligible customers may enroll in energy assistance programs to help pay their gas bills — including hardship, veteran, and Silver support — with applications accepted until May 31st, 2026 while funds last.  InkFreeNews
  • Mishawaka homeowners will face a gradual 3.75% annual increase in utility bills starting in 2026—part of a 20-year plan to keep rates sustainable. Council President Gregg Hixenbaugh said the change will be built into budgets to lessen the impact.  95.3 MNC
  • South Shore Line will conduct a multi-team emergency preparedness drill this evening near New Carlisle from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. EDT between Tulip Road and Smilax Road+ first responders will practice crisis procedures during the drill. Trains will slow in the area+ flaggers and emergency vehicles will work to keep riders and the public safe.  WNDU

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dustin’s Place, a nonprofit for grief support, held its grand opening for a new center in Plymouth earlier Wednesday where families enjoyed an ice cream bar and tours. Executive director Viki Brown said the dedicated space ends five years of operating from borrowed church facilities.  WNDU
  • St. Joseph County health leaders launched the Babies Need to Breathe campaign at the County Library’s Community Learning Center during Safe Sleep Awareness Month to reduce sleep-related infant deaths. The campaign aims to reach zero deaths by 2027 through education and safe sleep practices—teaching families that babies should sleep alone on their backs.  WVPE
