COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, Notre Dame hosts Irish Jam at Eddy Street Commons in South Bend as local students and community members enjoy free basketball games. Heightened security measures — including fencing, metal detectors and bag checks — were put in place after recent gunfire incidents raised public safety concerns.  WNDU
  • Mishawaka announced its annual fall leaf pick-up program will start on Monday, October 27th—leaves will be collected each week the day before residents’ regular trash pick-up to help reduce fire risks from dry debris.  WSBT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A new sporting goods store, Academy Sports + Outdoors, is now open in Mishawaka at the old Burlington Coat Factory store in the plaza at Grape Road and Indian Ridge Drive. The store launched a four-day event—partnering with Notre Dame wide receiver Jaden Greathouse to surprise 20 local kids with a $5,000 shopping spree while offering free gift cards from Friday through Sunday.  WSBT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials will host a Phase II Ribbon Cutting at Rose Park on October 10 at 1:00 p.m.—the event will include remarks, partner recognition and free Kona Ice for those in attendance. The celebration will unveil new amenities such as a basketball court, pickleball and tennis courts, a second pavilion, Belgium Bowling lanes, bocce ball courts and a GaGa pit.  City of Mishawaka

HEALTH NEWS

  • The St. Joseph County Department of Health is offering free radon test kits to help residents check their homes—one out of four homes has elevated radon levels that can increase lung cancer risks. Residents with high levels may qualify for a grant to install a radon mitigation system.  95.3 MNC
  • Health officials in Indiana urge residents to get a flu shot as fall begins because flu season will start in October and peak from December to February. They point out that over 270 flu deaths occurred last year—while the FluMist vaccine taken at home is not available here even though it is offered in other states.  InkFreeNews
  • Notre Dame associate professor Joyce Adams is launching a pilot program to give 104 new mothers in local counties earlier postpartum care with doctor visits at two weeks and six weeks and monthly checkups with a nurse + community health worker during the baby's first year. She received a $310,000 grant from Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation and her work will be featured at halftime of today's Notre Dame-Boise State football game.  WVPE
