  • Local officers were recognized at a ceremony last Thursday at the YWCA in South Bend for their work with the Domestic Abuse–Law Enforcement program—which connects survivors with crisis support, safety planning, and shelter—during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The awards honored officers who responded rapidly to domestic violence calls.  95.3 MNC

  • South Bend's Bucket restaurant will reopen its doors as The Bucket Shack this weekend. Owners Amy and Steve Stidham, who also run the Food Shack on Bristol Street in Elkhart, plan to serve prime rib burgers and fresh menu options to welcome customers.  WNDU

CRIME NEWS

  • On Thursday morning, the YWCA honored seven local police officers from Mishawaka, South Bend and St. Joseph County for using the DA-LE program to protect domestic abuse survivors—an initiative that began with a decade-old lethality assessment.  WNDU

  • Cardinal Services has received a $4,000 grant from the Indiana Arts Commission for its RedBird Art Studio—plans include buying supplies and setting up art exhibits that let artists with intellectual disabilities share their creative work with the community.  InkFreeNews

  • Anna Yoder of Mishawaka High School was named the Tribune's Student of the Week for Oct. 20 by Tribune readers—nominees included students from NorthWood and Mishawaka High. Tribune editors will announce next week's nominees on Monday.  South Bend Tribune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Indiana DNR is asking residents to email photo documentation of Mediterranean gecko sightings to track the nonnative lizard species — found near buildings and outdoor lights. The lizards, which are not dangerous, may appear as hitchhikers from shipments and are most active at night.  InkFreeNews

  • NIPSCO gas main repairs on Grape Road between Imus Drive and Catalpa Drive have extended lane restrictions due to weather delays—motorists are advised to use alternate routes while repairs continue until Nov. 5.  ABC57

  • Freshman basketball player Leah Macy is recovering from a severe knee injury that halted her season at Notre Dame—she has celebrated small victories like a small jump as she works with teammates and coach Niele Ivey to rebuild her strength.  South Bend Tribune
  • Notre Dame running backs Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price were named to the Pony Express Award midseason watch list as the only program with two running backs to post over 500 rushing yards this season— they will face Boston College on November 1 with kickoff time pending.  WNDU
