  • WNDU and the Food Bank of Northern Indiana have launched their annual Turkeys on the Table Challenge—each $15 donation is matched to provide two turkeys for families in need this Thanksgiving. Donations will support households facing tough choices between buying food and covering other basic expenses—helping ensure a holiday meal for those struggling.  WNDU

  • Notre Dame fan Kim Larson spent seven weeks carving and painting giant wooden leprechaun whirligigs that stand 8-foot tall and weigh 300 pounds — he made them as a personal tribute inspired by his love for Notre Dame and his artist father. The pieces are not for sale.  WNDU
  • Indiana Dinosaur Museum and South Bend Chocolate Company kicked off Halloween celebrations by starting the inaugural coffin races — a race where a participant rode in a coffin along a set path. The event also features a haunted house, carriage rides, wagon hay rides, and a pumpkin patch for visitors.  WSBT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Indiana employers have seen new challenges after a presidential proclamation issued on Sept 19 added a $100K fee on H-1B visas and introduced a $1M option for wealthy visa applicants, making it harder for firms to hire skilled foreign workers. Several organizations including Cummins and Purdue have paused recruitment while lawsuits and new federal rules are expected—employers now worry that these changes will disrupt their hiring plans, with the fee set to expire in 2026 unless extended.  InkFreeNews

  • Indiana motorists will see a decrease in gas taxes next month when the state lowers its gasoline use tax from 18 cents to 16.7 cents per gallon on November 1—this change is based on the recent statewide average retail prices.  InkFreeNews

  • Michiana residents dropped off unused prescription drugs—at sites including Clay Fire Station 21—as part of National Prescription Drug Take Back Day to reduce medication misuse and help keep drugs safe away from children.  WNDU
  • A walk at Howard Park held on Oct. 25 raised funds and awareness for breast cancer as community members joined to support research. Organizers said the event made big strides in the fight against the disease—promising more support in the future.  WNDU

SPORTS NEWS

  • Five high school volleyball teams from Michiana, including Penn, Mishawaka Marian, NorthWood, Lakeland, and Triton, advanced to semi-state next weekend after winning their regional championships on Saturday + semifinals and the championship match are set for Nov. 1.  WNDU
  • Indiana high school football sectionals ended with decisive wins (Mishawaka teams won in Sectionals 18 and 25) and semifinal matchups will be held next Friday; Michigan schools wrapped up their regular season and will start postseason play next week.  WNDU
  • The Notre Dame men’s basketball team lost to DePaul 69—62 in its final preseason exhibition game at Purcell Pavilion Friday night; they will start the regular season at home on Nov. 3 when they face LIU Brooklyn at 7 p.m.  WNDU
