COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Food Bank of Northern Indiana served a record 383 households on Wednesday as local hunger grew with SNAP benefits frozen amid the government shutdown. Executive Director Marijo Martinec said the South Bend pantry will add Thursday service starting next week + a $50,000 donation will help buy food while the shutdown continues.  WVPE
  • A community celebration was held for Penn High School’s girls flag football team after they defeated Lawrence North 35-12 earlier this month to secure Indiana’s first state championship in the sport.   • Monterrey Mexican Bar and Grill in Mishawaka is offering a free Community Plate to help those affected by potential SNAP cuts—no forms are needed for this dine-in meal, which will be available until the first week of November or while supplies last.  WSBT

  • Amazon’s Project Rainier—an $11 billion collaboration with Amazon Web Services and Anthropic—became partially operational near New Carlisle on October 31 and is expected to create over 1,000 jobs.  WSBT

  • Fairfield High School opened its new fieldhouse on Oct 30 with a grand opening and ribbon-cutting—officials said the facility will host practices, fine arts activities and later be open for public use like walking and pickleball.  95.3 MNC

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Kankakee River Basin Commission installed a new river monitoring system at Jasinski Park that uses radar to track water levels in real time for flood warnings—local officials said the gauge will feed data to NOAA and more sensors are planned for future installation.  WSBT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • SNAP benefits were suspended on Nov. 1 due to the federal shutdown, affecting about 20,000 South Bend residents who rely on food assistance. Local officials reactivated the St. Joseph County Emergency Food Initiative — a network of food banks, pantries, and mobile sites — while school meal programs continue without interruption.  South Bend Tribune
  • St. Joseph County reactivated its emergency food initiative because a shutdown will block SNAP benefits on Saturday—Portage Pantry and East Race Market will offer free fresh produce starting Tuesday until benefits resume.  WSBT
