COMMUNITY NEWS

  • East Race Market in South Bend began providing free produce Tuesday for the re-activated St. Joseph County Emergency Food Initiative during the shutdown and will continue offering produce every Tuesday until SNAP benefits resume—customers need only show up without registering.  WSBT
  • The Raclin Murphy Encore Center has finished its $9 million renovation and work is now starting on new projects to open up the space. Construction teams will begin the next steps soon to expand the facility.  WNDU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • South Bend Community School Board approved a record $257 million 2026 budget yesterday that gives major teacher raises, including starting pay of $55,000 and a nearly $9,000 average increase over the next two years—$15 million in savings from budget efficiencies made this possible.  WVPE
  • St. Joseph Public Schools proposed a bond on the November ballot that will fund school building renovations, technology updates, new school buses and athletic fields—voters will decide its future.  WNDU

HEALTH NEWS

  • Tom Welborn, 72, lost his local chemotherapy when MHO Plymouth stopped offering treatment on July 3 and now drives 32 miles each way to Mishawaka three times a month to stabilize his MDS. He said the long drive causes anxiety with winter weather concerns—he remains determined to fight his cancer and live 12 more years.  WNDU

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Notre Dame women’s basketball team will begin its season tonight as it hosts Fairleigh Dickinson—set to tip off at 7 p.m.—at Purcell Pavilion. The team is ranked 15th—returning only two players from last season—and new players will build team chemistry in early games.  WNDU
  • Six Michiana-area high school bands, including Concord, Fairfield, Goshen, Jimtown, NorthWood and Penn, will compete in the ISSMA state marching band finals at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis this Saturday. The competitions will run from 10:45 a.m. to 8:45 p.m.—and Wawasee will perform an exhibition at 9:25 a.m.  WNDU
  • Notre Dame basketball sophomore Cole Certa scored a career-high 22 points in 24 minutes off the bench on November 3 against LIU Brooklyn — including six 3-pointers — which helped secure the win.  South Bend Tribune
