Good morning, Mishawaka. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 6th of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Fernwood Botanical Garden will host a holiday market — featuring over 40 talented makers — that will offer unique gifts and crafts for the season.  WNDU
  • Mishawaka Utilities Electric and AEP are working together to restore power in the University Park area—where a tree struck power lines during construction, leaving 3,280 customers affected. Crews expect repairs to take several more hours as they work to reroute the power feed and expedite restoration.  City of Mishawaka
  • Thirteen-year-old Brent likes video games and finds school hard while hoping to join a family with siblings. Indiana Kids Belong is asking local families to offer foster care and adoption opportunities—helping Brent find a loving home.  WNDU
  • Nearly 8,000 I&M customers in northeastern St. Joseph County still lack power today as crews work to restore service by 4:30—5 p.m. Mishawaka Utilities is also working in University Park from Douglas Road north and police advise drivers to treat intersections as four-way stops due to out power traffic signals.  WNDU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tonight, a local coalition made up of schools, a transit system, and community organizations will gather under Operation Education to explore a redesigned school transportation plan that could help more students reach their schools. The pilot project under House Enrolled Act 1515 will examine how to combine existing bus fleets with public transit resources — an effort that is one of three statewide initiatives.  WSBT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Yesterday, South Bend Mayor James Mueller and city leaders held a news conference to address a food emergency caused by government shutdown delays in SNAP benefits. The city issued an order suspending utility shutoffs for three months—while community leaders urged using $4.8 million in cash reserves to help SNAP recipients—measures aimed at supporting affected families.  WNDU
  • Food pantry client Christopher Pickens said he feels supported while relying on food banks as the government shutdown delays SNAP payments—this has left many federal workers and others in need of help. Food Bank of Northern Indiana Executive Director Marijo Martinec said donations of shelf-stable items like dried beans, rice, and peanut butter are needed to allow families to put together multiple meals.  WSBT
  • Lane restrictions on University Drive near Target in Mishawaka reduced the westbound lane for drivers because a curb and road work project began November 5. Authorities say the work is expected to finish November 14—causing longer drive times until then.  WSBT
  • The Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs launched Operation Emergency Food—an extension of the Military Family Relief Fund—to supply urgent food assistance to veterans and families impacted by federal SNAP benefit disruptions, and eligible persons were urged to apply by calling the service—also available at local Veterans Service Offices.  95.3 MNC
