If you hoped for a top-10 start, the committee had other plans. The first rankings, released Tuesday, left Notre Dame out of the top 10 at No. 11, even though the Irish are fourth in the AP poll.

Goshen News points to the schedule. Notre Dame's one loss is to BYU, the only ranked team it has played, and the paper writes that last year the Irish just missed the playoff after losing to the two best teams they played.

  • BYU: ninth at 7-1, the team that beat Notre Dame
  • Top three: Miami, Georgia and Utah
  • Next test: Notre Dame hosts Miami, Nov. 7
