If you had Purdue's 2027 trip to South Bend circled, you can erase it. Purdue announced Tuesday that a road game at West Virginia takes Notre Dame's spot on its 2027 schedule. Purdue said the addition "will place a pause on Purdue's longstanding series against Notre Dame".

ABC57 says Purdue's release cited "schedule movement involving multiple schools". The Journal & Courier adds that new scheduling minimums influenced the move. Athletic director Tommy McClelland said the series will be reevaluated for future schedules.

  • West Virginia game date: not yet determined
  • Last Purdue-West Virginia meeting: a home-and-home series in 1995-96
  • 2028 Notre Dame game: Purdue is also seeking a replacement

The Purdue-Notre Dame series now has a pause on its calendar

  1. 1896Notre Dame and Purdue meet in football for the first time.
  2. 1957The schools begin playing for the Shillelagh Trophy.
  3. 2007Purdue wins its last game in the series.
  4. 2027A West Virginia road game takes the Notre Dame slot on Purdue's schedule.
  5. 2028Purdue had been scheduled to host Notre Dame at Ross-Ade Stadium.

Notre Dame's 2027 schedule now has 11 opponents, starting with Kent State on Aug. 28 in South Bend.

Notre Dame and Illinois will play football for the first time since 1968

If you're a Notre Dame fan, here are two new dates for your calendar. The Irish and Illini announced a home-and-home series Tuesday. Illinois visits Notre Dame Stadium on Sept. 4, 2027, and Notre Dame goes to in Champaign on Sept. 2, 2028. WNDU says networks and game times will be announced later.

“It has been too long since these two tradition-rich programs have met, given our proximity, common values and deep roots in Chicago and throughout the Midwest.”

Illinois athletic director Josh Whitman

The series replaces Purdue on Notre Dame's schedule and Missouri on Illinois'. Missouri athletic director Laird Veatch said the school is "disappointed by Illinois' decision to withdraw from multiple future football games, including a home game for Mizzou in 2027."

  • Meetings so far: 12, including seven straight seasons from 1940-46
  • Notre Dame under Marcus Freeman vs. Big Ten teams: 10-3
  • Purdue's record over the last three seasons: 6-26
